City to Host Community Meeting Nov. 17 on Proposed Eight-Story Courthouse in Valencia

The City of Santa Clarita will hold a community meeting on Tuesday, November 17, at 6:00 p.m. so residents can learn about the State of California’s proposal to build an eight-story courthouse at the intersection of McBean Parkway and Valencia Boulevard, and share their concerns directly with city officials.

The meeting takes place at the College of the Canyons Performing Arts Center, 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road. City staff plan to walk through the state’s proposal, explain what the city has done so far to push for a different location, describe how the state has responded, and take questions and feedback from the community.

At eight stories, the proposed courthouse would be the tallest building in the Santa Clarita Valley, rising two stories above the next tallest structure. According to the city, the proposed site raises concerns about traffic congestion, parking, public safety, whether the building fits the surrounding neighborhood, and the overall character of the area.

The City Council has opposed the proposed location repeatedly and has put forward alternative sites it believes could house a courthouse with fewer impacts on nearby residents and businesses. The state Judicial Council has turned down those alternatives and continues to advance its preferred location. Mayor Laurene Weste, in the city’s announcement, said the council has contested the location since the state first announced it, arguing the decision was made without advance notice to the city or meaningful community input.

The city is encouraging residents, neighborhood associations, local businesses and other community stakeholders to attend the November 17 meeting.

What it means for residents

If you live or drive near McBean Parkway and Valencia Boulevard, this is the city’s main public forum on a project that would add the valley’s tallest building to one of its busiest intersections. No decision is being taken at this meeting; it is an information and public-comment session. The meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17, at the College of the Canyons Performing Arts Center.
