Free Drive-Thru Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Collection Set for Nov. 21 at College of the Canyons

Residents can clear out old paint, motor oil, batteries and dead electronics for free at a drive-thru Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Collection Event on Saturday, November 21, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the College of the Canyons South Parking Lot, 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road.

The free event accepts a long list of hazardous household items: antifreeze, paint, paint thinner, turpentine, motor oil, oil filters, brake fluid, cleaners containing acid or lye, pool chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, household and car batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, and unwanted or expired prescription medications. Electronics are also accepted, including televisions, computers, cell phones, printers and stereos. Anyone bringing needles or sharps will be directed to a designated spot where they step out of the vehicle to place them in a bin.

The event is run as a drive-thru. The city asks participants to pack waste in a sturdy box, in its original labeled container when possible, and place it in the trunk. Drivers stay in their vehicles while trained staff remove the waste from the trunk or pickup bed, and any boxes or containers used to transport items must be left at the site.

Some items are not accepted: ammunition, radioactive materials, explosives, controlled substances, biohazardous waste, large appliances such as refrigerators and water heaters, and any waste from businesses. Each vehicle is limited to 125 pounds or 15 gallons of material. No reservations are required, and the event is open to all Los Angeles County residents.

The collection is hosted by the City of Santa Clarita together with the County of Los Angeles, and organized by the county Department of Public Works and the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County. Questions can go to (888) CLEAN-LA, and GreenSantaClarita.com lists other local green events and permanent collection centers.

What it means for residents

This is the fall chance to legally and safely get rid of the garage shelf of half-used chemicals and the box of dead electronics without a fee or an appointment. Pack everything in the trunk before you go, expect to leave your containers behind, and leave the ammunition, appliances and business waste at home. Doors are open 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 21.
